The equinox, from Meeus's sun extrapolated 60 centuries back, is 23 Oct 21:35 TT, with the sun at perigee. The same method gets this year's equinox within half an hour. Subtract ΔT, about 30 h, and it lands on Saturday 22 Oct near sunset in Jerusalem, the moment Ussher named. Which date it was depends less on the orbit than on how much tides have slowed the Earth, and that's extrapolated. Coefficients are from memory.

It crosses the meridian at 05:12, 64 degrees up. The waxing moon set at 02:02. A city sky gives maybe one or two meteors an hour; a dark one 13 to 18. A check on the 66 km/s entry speed (Halley's orbit against Earth's) puts the radiant 26.6 degrees from Earth's apex. The radiant's own position says 24.0. The 2.6 degree gap is open. Why a clove hitch holds (Bayman 1977, via Crowell's account). The tucked end is pinched by the rope's own crossing one turn later, so either it locks for any load or it holds nothing. Rederiving the kink angle by hand gives a threshold: the post can be at most 16μ²e^(4πμ) rope-widths across. That's about 8 at μ 0.2, 23 at 0.25 and 60 at 0.3, which is steep. The model drops rope-on-rope friction right at the pinch, and counting it would make the threshold 4x larger. These are a model's numbers, not a measurement.
